Panda keeper Tan Jintao, known as “Grandpa Tan” by his fans on the Internet, received an official invitation to Spring Festival Gala.
Tan was born in 1972 and he has been working at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding since 1999, where he is responsible for caring for pandas aged 2 to 3 years old. As many pandas have grown up and become parents, Tan has gone from being a “nanny daddy” to a “grandpa”. He says taking care of panda cubs is just like taking care of growing children.
Tan’s daily schedule is mainly about his job duties at the panda base. He wakes up at 6 a. m. to check the enclosures（围场）, and provides bamboo and water for the pandas. In the morning, while the pandas enjoy their outdoor activities, he quickly cleans the enclosures. Sometimes but not often, he also adds bamboo for the pandas at night.

What is gratitude（感恩） Why is gratitude important Gratitude is the feeling of appreciation. It’s being thankful for what you have. Practicing gratitude is important can help you feel better in many ways.
Andrea Hussong is a scientist. She works at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has found that gratitude helps kids understand their connection to other. “Gratitude connects us to other people in the world,” Hussong says. “If we’re able to express gratitude to other people, we connected to them.” Moreover, gratitude helps us notice what we have. These are things we might not always appreciate. Food, clothing, and a place to sleep at night are examples of these. Imagine you’ re in a sci-fi（科幻小说）world, and you video-call your friend. You might see them in a three-dimensional（3D）way—or in holograms（全息影像）. Although this isn’t possible in real life yet, researchers recently made holograms easier to create, said a new study.
To take a 3D photo of a person, most hologram technologies need special cameras. They record how the person looks from different angles under different lights. This information makes the hologram look lifelike. However, hologram can’t be widely used because they are difficult to make.
The researchers from Chiba University in Japan made a new computer program. It can turn normal pictures we take into 3D holograms.
Their program used a technology called deep neural networks（深度神经网络）. First, it receives information from an image taken by a normal camera. It then predicts the depth of things in the image. For example, in a 3D photo, the background should be deeper than the person.
With all the information, the program creates a 3D hologram. But it can look strange at first. The program will then check the hologram to fix problem and make it look more real.
The program can be used to create holograms in VR headsets. For example, a user sends a picture, and the other user can see the “real” look of it in 3D．If it’s used in cars, this makes it easier for the drivers to see and thus makes sure that they won’t miss important information.
In the future, when holograms become more common, they can also help doctors. Medical students can learn quickly by looking at 3D images of the human body, and doctors can better understand a patient’s illness.
