A New Hampshire woman has raised nearly $400, 000 for an elderly disabled man named Donald, who has been battling to keep up with bills while caring for his wife. The story began when Jenelle encountered Donald at a pawn (典当) shop in Manchester, where he was unwillingly pawning jewelry to cover his bills.
Donald shared with Jenelle the hardships he was facing: His rent had increased, and he was finding it increasingly difficult to make the pot boil while caring for his wife. He feared they might lose their home and that his beloved wife could end up in a care facility due to their financial pressure. Deeply moved by his situation, Jenelle immediately took action. She gathered $1, 300 from her own savings and contributions from friends and family to help the 90-year-old. A video she shared of Donald receiving the money quickly went viral, recording the moment he called Jenelle “a hero”.
The outpouring of support didn’t stop there. Jenelle set up a GoFundMe page for Donald, and the response flooded in. Donations poured in from around the world, bringing the total to nearly $400, 000. In an update, Jenelle shared the emotional moment she told Donald about the incredible generosity of strangers. “I told him it meant that everyone in the world was seeing this and stepping forward to donate,” she said. “Even before I told him the amount, he was already extremely emotional and couldn’t believe the kindness of strangers across the world.”
Despite the outpouring of support, Donald remained humble, insisting he didn’t deserve it and that he was just an ordinary man. But as Jenelle explained to him, he’s much more than that to the countless people who have been touched by his story. Jenelle plans to keep the fundraiser open until she and Donald can meet with an agent to ensure the money is safely managed. This remarkable act of kindness shows how the generosity of strangers can transform lives, offering hope and security to those who need it most.

The international merchant fleet of more than 100, 000 cargo (货物) ships transports more than 80% of global trade. But it’s also responsible for about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions (排放). Without a quick switch from dirty fuels to cleaner energies, its pollution is forecast to increase. So sails make a comeback in shipping.
Mariners (水手) pushing for wind power say investors used to view them as something of a joke. But as they pioneer a comeback for sail-powered cargo ships, they’re having the last laugh. “It’s our job to prove that it’s possible,” Jourdan, a mariner, said aboard the new Grain de Sail II as it sailed off the French port of Saint-Malo.
“We want to reduce and even remove the carbon footprint,” said Jourdan. They made their first sail-powered cargo ship, Grain de Sail I. Later, with its latest techniques and materials, Grain de Sail II comes a supercharged modern advanced replacement to the former sail-powered cargo ship.
In the European Union(EU), larger cargo ships have to start paying for some of their emissions from 2025 and follow new EU regulations that aim to promote low-carbon fuels. Such pressure could strengthen wind’s appeal.
What happens when the wind doesn’t blow A French shipper is open about the fact that when its new ship begins sailing in 2025, it will use its fuel system when winds alone can’t meet its target of 13-day crossings. “We accept and recognize the fact that about 30% of our energy will come from a fuel system.” a manager of the shipper said.
“We are going to learn and improve. And we’ll build ships that are bigger, that are more specialized for certain goods, and more efficient at every level,” the manager added. The bigger ship will also use only wind power, except for operation in ports. That will reduce its ships’ carbon footprint to just a small part of the emissions from fuel-powered ships.
8. What is the main reason for sails returning to shipping
A. To lower shipping coats. B. To reduce carbon footprint.
C. To increase trade efficiency. D. To improve shipping capacity.
9. What was investors’ attitude to the sail-powered cargo ships
A. Confident. B. Unclear. C. Objective. D. Negative.
10. How does the French shipper deal with insufficient wind power for its new ship
A. By adopting extra power system. B. By relying completely on wind.
C. By stopping the operations. D. By using alternative energy.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Extinction of Fuel-powered Ships. B. The New Pioneer of Carbon Reduction.
C. The Regeneration of Sail-powered Ships. D. The Rise of Low-carbon Shipping Technologies.

Mars may be around 140 million miles away from Earth, but the red planet is influencing our deep oceans by helping drive “giant whirlpools” according to new research.
Scientists analyzed sediments (沉积物), drilled from hundreds of deep-sea sites over the past half century, to look back tens of millions of years into Earth’s past, in order to better understand the strength of deep ocean currents.
What they found surprised them. The sediments revealed that deep-sea currents weakened and strengthened over 2. 4 million-year climate cycles. “These cycles are linked to the interactions of Mars and Earth orbiting the sun,” said Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study’s co-author.
The two planets affect each other through a phenomenon called “resonance” which is when two orbiting bodies apply a gravitational (重力的) push and pull on each other — sometimes described as a kind of harmonization between distant planets. This interaction changes the shape of their orbits, affecting how close they are to each other and their distance from the sun. For Earth, this interaction with Mars translates to periods of increased solar energy — meaning a warmer climate — and this is related to more strong ocean currents.
These currents, described as “giant whirlpools”, could reach the bottom of the deep ocean, eroding (侵蚀) the seafloor and causing large accumulations of sediments, like snowdrifts. Deep-sea sediments build in continuous layers during calm conditions while strong ocean currents disrupt this, leaving a visible stamp of their existence. “This geological record provides us with valuable insights about how the oceans operate in a warmer world, especially nowadays when global warming is heating up oceans,” added Adriana.
Joel Hirschi, associate head of the National Oceanography Centre in the UK, who was not involved in the research, said the finding of a 2. 4 million-year cycle in sea sediments was noteworthy. However, he added, “The link with the ocean circulation is speculative and the evidence that deep ocean circulation is stronger in warm climates is thin.”
12. The interaction between Mars and Earth directly affects ________.
A. the distance between them B. their shapes and sizes
C. their gravitational forces D. the sediments on them
13. What happens on Earth in warmer climates
A. More sediments build on the seashore. B. Deeper ocean currents are weekend.
C. The way sediments accumulate changes. D. Warm currents change their directions.
14. What does Adriana think of the finding
A. It’s valuable to the research of planet relations. B. It’s inspiring to the study of warming oceans.
C. It’s beneficial to help prevent climate change. D. It’s helpful to our effort of saving ocean life.
15. What does the underlined word “speculative” in the last paragraph mean
A. Valuable. B. Conservative. C. Believable. D. Assumed.

Years ago, Virginia Squier led a group of middle school students on an educational tour to England. Accompanying her was her young daughter, Chambers, who was just eight years old at the time.
One evening, near the end of the visit, Squier, Chambers and the school group were on a platform of the subway and got ready to head to their next destination. It was 5 pm and the station was rather packed. Squier had been holding Chambers’ hand tightly to keep her close. However, as she momentarily let go to count her students and ensure everyone was present, a train pulled into the station.
In the chaos of the moment, Chambers, caught up in the flow of the crowd, inadvertently (不经意地) stepped onto the train. Squier only realized what had happened as the train doors began to close. Panic rushed to Squier as she saw Chambers inside the carriage. Desperately, she tried to board the train to bring Chambers back out, but it was too late. The doors were shut, and the train began to move, gradually picking up speed.
Squier’s heart raced as she ran alongside the train, her eyes locked on her daughter through the glass window. Chambers’ face was a picture of fear and confusion, her small fists pounding against the window as she cried out for her mother. Beside her stood a man dressed. in black leather, his dark glasses adding an air of mystery — and, to Squier, a sense of dread(恐惧). Her mind raced with unpleasant thoughts about who this man might be and what his intentions were. As the train disappeared into the tunnel, Squier was left standing on the platform, paralyzed (使瘫痪) by fear and helplessness.
Fighting back tears, Squier acted quickly and turned to the platform for help. Her voice trembled as she struggled to convey what had happened. With all that done, she was waiting anxiously.

【答案】Dear Mike,
I’m writing to share with you an AI course launched this term in our school. The course is all about understanding how AI works. We learn about smart machines that can think and learn like humans. We also explore how AI is used in different fields, like medicines, art, and even video games. The best part is the hands-on projects where we get to build simple AI programs ourselves.
I’m totally hooked! It’s challenging but incredibly fascinating. It’s amazing to see how AI can solve real-world problems and transform different industries. I’m learning a lot and really enjoying the process.
What do you think about all this AI stuff I’d love to hear from you.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】Before Squier got the news from the platform, one of her students suddenly shouted, “Look! Chambers is back!” Squier raised her head, and to her great relief, there stood her little girl, safe and sound. Overwhelmed with emotion, she rushed to Chambers and hugged her tightly, tears streaming down her face. Then she noticed the man in black leather standing a few steps behind her daughter. Chambers explained that the man had witnessed what happened and immediately stepped in to help. He had comforted her, guided her off the train at the next stop, and brought her back on a returning train to reunite with her mother.
Squier’s first thought that the man was frightening was completely wrong. She was flooded with gratitude and regret. Before she could properly thank him, however, the man quietly walked away, disappearing into the crowd. Squier wished she could find him to express how deeply his kindness had impacted her. The experience left a lasting impression on Squier. Not only had the man saved her daughter, but he had also taught her a valuable lesson about not judging others based on their appearance. To this day, whenever Squier catches herself making assumptions about someone’s character based on how they look, she remembers the man in black leather.
