Ernest Owusu was 13 in 1980 when he was given the opportunity to appear in the audience of a BBC show, and ask Thatcher how she felt about being called the Iron Lady. This encounter re-emerged in a BBC’s programme recently.
At the time of their meeting, Owusu was on free school meals, living on a public estate in Brixton, south London, where he and his sister were being raised by their mother Rose, a struggling hairdresser.
Now 57, Owusu looks remarkably similar even with a greying beard. But his life has been transformed. The father of three is a human resources director, and the first black captain of the Addington golf club in its 110-year history. As a black guy, it is about breaking the glass ceiling.
Speaking in its clubhouse, Owusu describes his rise in social status (地位) as a “Thatcherite Journey”. And he says it began by asking the woman herself. “To this day it still has an impact. My confidence changed from that sliding-door moment. Something about her connected with me.”
Thatcher told Owusu she enjoyed being called the Iron Lady. “I think it’s rather a praise, don’t you ” she said, “Because so often people have said to me if you’re in your job you’ve got to be soft and warm and human, but you’ve got to have a touch of steel.” Owusu recalls the moment, “I just remember her eye contact. She was answering me, not the camera. She welcomed the question saying you’ve got to be firm in this world. And that stuck with me.”
After the show was broadcast, Owusu said he became “a little hero in Brixton for a good three months”. Owusu added, “It all gave me extra confidence. Doors might not have opened so quickly. It was one of those key moments to make you do things maybe you wouldn’t otherwise have done.”
4. What do we know about Owusu when he was 13
A. He met with Thatcher twice.
B. He joined a famous golf club.
C. He hosted a BBC’s programme.
D. He lived at the bottom of society.
5. What do the underlined words “sliding-door moment” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Turning point. B. Important decision.
C Social status. D. Remarkable achievement.
6. Based on the text what made a big difference to Owusu
A. Others’ treating him equally at work.
B. Others’ voting him a hero in Brixton.
C. Thatcher’s efforts to preserve his dignity.
D. Thatcher’s faith in the necessity of toughness.
7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. The Art of Dialogue B. The Power of Confidence
C. A Life-changing Meeting D. A Status-improving Tale

“Yi, er, san…” A Chinese language student counts each stroke while writing the Chinese character for “big”. This seems like a simple process, but new evidence suggests that studying Chinese and learning to write Chinese characters may train a whole array of cognitive (认知的) abilities not used in the study of other languages and writing systems.
Studying Chinese stimulates different parts of the brain because Chinese is very different than English in sound, tone, and script. A study conducted by researchers from the Wellcome Trust in the UK found that people who speak Chinese use both temporal lobes of their brain to understand the language. This is very different from English-language speakers who use only the left temporal lobe. The difference is obvious because speakers of Chinese use intonation (语调) to recognize differences between completely different meanings of particular words.
In addition to the unique tonal distinctions of Chinese, the practice of handwriting, especially of Chinese characters, aids the development of motor skills, learning shapes and letters, the visual identification of graphics, and keeps the mind sharp. Research from Indiana University confirmed the importance of handwriting to cognitive development. Through the use of MRI, researchers found that neural (神经的) activity in children who practiced printing by hand was more enhanced and “adult-like” than those who just looked at pared with English which is mostly linear and written from left to right, Chinese characters are more complex in structure and writing involves strokes in all four directions: up, down left, and right. The sequential movement of the fingers and hand to form a character activates neural activity in the working, thinking and spatial memory of the brain of the learners.
While the research on the relationship between the learning of Chinese and cognition is not yet conclusive or comprehensive, there is good evidence to suggest that learning Chinese tones and characters give an added dimension to language learning. Though admittedly time-consuming, the investment in learning how to read and write Chinese characters can clearly bring advantages.
8. What did researchers from the Wellcome Trust find
A. English has simpler rules for writing.
B. Intonation shows meaning in English.
C. Speaking Chinese takes more brain power.
D. Chinese has the most complex writing system.
9. What can we know from paragraph 3
A. English is much easier to write than Chinese.
B. Writing by hand greatly promotes the ability of learning.
C. Handwriting matters in early childhood education.
D. Writing Chinese characters trains the brain.
10. What does the author think of learning Chinese according to the last paragraph
A. It requires some strategies. B. It is a worthwhile pursuit.
C. It has become a new trend. D. It is easier than people think.
11. What’s the best title for the text
A. Learning Chinese Can Make You Cleverer
B. Chinese Is Hard for Foreign People to Learn
C. Tips on Learning to Write Chinese Characters
D. Major Differences Between Chinese and English
D
A corn plant knows how to find water in soil with the very tips of its roots, but some varieties, including many used for developing high-output corn in the U.S., appear to have lost part of that ability, according to a Stanford-led study. With climate change increasing droughts, the findings hold potential for developing more drought-resistant varieties of corn.
The study, published in the journal Science, uncovers genetic mechanisms (遗传机制) behind “hydropatterning”, or how plant roots branch toward water and avoid dry spaces in soil. In particular, the researchers discovered that ethylene, a plant hormone (激素) known to help bananas ripen, also influences how roots grow to seek water.
For this study, the researchers developed a new, simplified way to study water sensitivity in roots. They found corn varieties adapted to hot and wet regions like Mexico were very good at making new root branches toward water and avoiding dry areas. In contrast, the varieties adapted to moderate regions of North America frequently grew roots randomly without distinguishing between dry and wet areas in the soil.
“Interestingly, the plants that are better at sensing where the water is are also making deeper root systems,” said lead author Johannes Scharwies. “One idea is that if the plant doesn’t waste time growing root branches into places where it doesn’t find any water and nutrients, then it has more energy to grow deeper down where water is more likely.”
Genetic analyses reveal two plant hormones, auxin and ethylene, play a role in how corn roots respond to water. While auxin was already known to help control this process, ethylene’s involvement was a new discovery. In experiments with thale cress — a model plant often used in research — the researchers found auxin signaling promotes root branch development toward water, while ethylene stops branching when the root is exposed to air.
Further research is needed to better understand the interaction of these genetic pathways before corn varieties can be developed with more drought-resistant root systems, but the findings highlight the significance of studying these localized responses at root tips, researchers said.
12. What is the primary focus of the Stanford-led study
A. Drought-resistant corn varieties.
B. Ethylene’s effect on fruit ripening.
C. Genetic regulation of root branching.
D. Impact of climate change on plant roots.
13. What can be inferred from Johannes Scharwies’ remarks
A Plant hormones make a big difference to root growth.
B. Nutrients guarantee better water-seeking root systems.
C. Root branching conserves energy for higher production.
D. Stronger hydropatterning was linked to greater root depth.
14. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A. Model plants in research.
B. Hormones’ role in root growth.
C. Genetic analysis methods.
D. Findings of previous research.
15. What does the last paragraph suggest future research do
A. Prioritize development of new corn varieties.
B. Work out the mechanisms of genetic interactions.
C. Concentrate merely on localized root responses.
D. Expand practical applications of hydropatterning.

In a small and peaceful town, there lived a boy named Joey, who was different from the other kids.
At school, when the teacher asked simple maths questions, Joey would often stare blankly at the blackboard, his brows knitted in confusion as he tried to make sense of the numbers. His answers, more often than not, were incorrect, and it didn’t take long for a few classmates to start laughing at him. During art class, while other kids were creating vivid masterpieces with ease, Joey’s drawings looked more like scribbles (涂鸦). The moment he showed his work, whispers spread across the room: “Look at what Joey drew! It’s so childish!”
Yes, Joey had some intellectual disabilities, which made it hard for him to learn and communicate like his peers. Because of this, Joey suffered some prejudice, but he never minded that and always wore a smile on his face.
One day in the PE class, when the teacher grouped the students, Tom, who was assigned to Joey’s group, argued that Joey always misjudged the ball and would cause the team to lose possession. “Why is Joey even on our team He’s so useless!” Tom added. With a calm yet firm voice, the teacher said, “Tom, we’re all here to learn and improve. Joey might struggle a bit more than the rest of you, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve a chance to play.” Although the PE teacher forced them into the same group, Joey was still not well treated.
After school, as fate would have it, dark clouds gathered overhead, and within minutes, a downpour began. The streets of the small town were quickly slick(滑的)with rainwater, and people ran hurriedly, seeking shelter. Joey was making his way home when suddenly he heard a loud noise.

【答案】Make Better Use of Digital Reading
Good morning, everyone!
Digital reading has both advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, it offers a great number of resources, which means we can access various kinds of books, magazines and articles easily. So convenient is it that we can read whenever and wherever we like. On the other hand, it can cause eye strain and distraction. For example, the blue light from the screen is harmful to our eyes.
To make better use of it, we should limit our reading time to protect our eyes. Also, we should choose reliable platforms where we can ensure the quality of reading materials. Let’s embrace digital reading smartly.
Thanks for listening.
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】On the street, an old woman fell down, groceries scattering (散落) all around her. She was struggling to get up and her cries for help were drowned by the sound of the pouring rain. Without hesitation, Joey rushed over. Kneeling beside her, he gently asked, “Ma’am, are you okay Let me help you.” Joey carefully lifted the woman up and then gathered her scattered groceries, making sure nothing was left behind. The woman thanked Joey, her voice shaky but filled with gratitude, “You’ve saved me from a lot of trouble on this terrible day.” Joey beamed at her, his smile brightening up the gloomy afternoon.
The next day at school, word of Joey’s heroic act spread like wildfire. The classmates who had once excluded Joey were now looking at him with newfound respect.
