A Brief History
When European settlers arrived on the scene, the Bluegrass Region was in use as a
hunting ground by many Native American tribes. Lexington was founded in 1775, seventeen
years before Kentucky became a state. William McConnell and a group of frontier explorers
were camped at a natural spring when word came that the first battle of the American
Revolution had been fought in Massachusetts. In honor of the battle, the group named their
state “Lexington”. By 1820, Lexington was one of the largest and wealthiest towns west of the
Allegheny Mountains.

We are constantly advised to stop smoking, eat more fruit and vegetables and cut our

Familiarity leads to contempt (蔑视), they say. We already know aspirin (阿司匹林) can
help prevent heart attacks and stroke. People may feel they have heard it before. The same
Oxford team has also already published its findings on colorectal cancer (结直肠癌),where
regular aspirin use cut deaths by a third.
Nonetheless, this comprehensive assessment across many deadly cancers has not been

explanation. But new evidence suggests this reasoning is wrong.
C.Dogs tend to yawn more after a familiar person.
D.Female dogs yawn much more than male dogs.
34.According to paragraph 4, what may the antisocial experimenter do to dogs
A.Ignore the dog even if it yawns.
To get a better understanding, researchers examined whether dogs’ yawning follows the
same behavioral patterns with humans. For instance, people are both more likely to yawn with
friends and families than with strangers. Besides, women, on average, report greater feelings of
empathy than men, and catch yawns more frequently. But earlier this year, when researchers
analyzed previous studies of yawning in dogs, they found no sign of this bias(偏向).
How often do dogs catch yawns from humans who are nice or not so nice to them In
another study, an experimenter would either play with or pet the dog, or plainly ignore the dog
and avoid all eye contact. The antisocial experimenter would also show the dog a treat and
command it to perform a trick, and then eat the treat themselves. But this did not affect the
dogs’ yawning.

It’s still unclear why we yawn in the first place. One hypothesis is that yawning is a stress
response that increases alertness by increasing blood flow to the brain and cooling it. “Having
yawns spread could help coordinate(协调 )a group’s alertness. However, this is one nice
evolutionary story that we don’t have that much evidence for. This doesn’t mean your dog
doesn’t have empathy at all. Instead, the study shows that animal minds are still a mystery,”

But just when everything appeared to be perfect, the night of the “talk” came. Sara’s Mom

with other ducks. It was not natural for ducks to live indoors with a family, her father told her.
He added Pinky needed to swim in ponds and do all the same things that ducks in the wild do.
Sara started to cry, knowing what was going to happen. Sara’s parents decided to take
Pinky to a park, which was two miles away. There was a pond with a lot of other ducks. Pinky
would have the chance to live a natural life and Sara could still visit her.
The big day came, Sara and her parents put Pinky in a box and drove to the park. Sara
said that Pinky did not look happy; maybe Pinky was convinced that she was a human, not a

Using Fitness to Find Happiness
With the rising concern of a sedentary lifestyle’s harmful impact on health and well-being, our school has taken active steps to organize a “Happy Fitness” campaign , aiming at developing a healthier lifestyle and a happier state of mind.
To launch this campaign, a series of activities such as fitness workshops and group exercises will be organized. We will invite professional fitness trainers to lead these activities, sharing their knowledge and skills, while providing participants with personalized training programs to help them.
In my opinion, this campaign is a great initiative, as it will not only benefit individuals' physical health but will also help improve their mental health. I believe it will be a promoter for a healthier and happier student community.

Everyone was sad when they left Pinky at the pond, even Sara’s father. But he tried to convince Sara that Pinky was fine. Walking towards the car, Sara looked over her shoulder and saw Pinky standing alone. The other ducks were swimming around in circles, looking at Pinky. To Sara, it seemed that they were trying to identify the strange animal. They didn’t recognize Pinky as a duck. Worried about Pinky, Sara dreamed of Pinky being bullied by other ducks the whole night.
The next morning, when looking out of the kitchen window, Sara couldn’t believe her eyes! There was Pinky, happily walking around on the grass. Thrilled at what she saw, she kept asking herself,” How did she make it ” After all, it was two miles away and he managed to walk back through the city street. Incredible! But her parents drove Pinky back to the pond again regardless of her request. The following morning, there was Pinky again on the grass! Seeing Pinky again, her father, waving his arms about wildly, moved his lips without saying anything. Meanwhile, Sarah, overjoyed, hugged Pinky tightly, tears streaming down her cheeks.
