As the capital city of France, Paris has endured as an important city for more than 2,000 years. Take an overview of the top tourist attractions in Paris.
Place des Vosges
The Place des Vosges, formerly called Place Royale, was the prototype (原型) for all residential squares in Europe. All houses were built, using the same design: red brick and steep pitched blues late roofs. Not only is it shaped like a true square, but also it is the first city square planned by a king (Henry Ⅳ in the early 17th century) . Third, it turned the Marais into a fashionable spot in the decades before the French Revolution.
Moulin Rouge
1889 is known as the year when France’s most famous landmark, the Eiffel Tower, was constructed. It’s also the year the Moulin Rouge opened its doors as an entertainment venue. It has been the subject of numerous films for many years.
Conciergerie
The Conciergerie was built to be the main palace for French kings who, over the centuries, enlarged it. Its Great Hall was one of the largest in Europe. The palace later became a tribunal (法庭) and prison, with famous prisoners including Marie Antoinette. Today the Conciergerie is a popular tourist attraction in Paris but also still serves as courts.
Palais Garnier
Architect Charles Garnier spared no ornate (华丽的) detail when designing the Palais Garnier in the 19th century. Perhaps this is why the building was the most expensive of its era. Seating nearly 2,000 people, the Palais Garnier is home to the National Opera of Paris. It is the star of the novel and subsequent films, Phantom of the Opera. The Palais Garnier is still in use today though mainly for ballet and is also home to the opera library museum.(江苏省苏州市常熟市2023-2024学年高二上学期开学考试-英语试题)

Charles Richard Drew’s great invention directly contributed to saving thousands of lives during World War Ⅱ, and continues to contribute to the life-saving work of the entire world of medicine later.
Born in 1904, Drew was the eldest of five children. He was intelligent and showed a talent for studies and sports from a young age. In 1922, his athletic ability earned him an athletic scholarship to attend Amherst College in Massachusetts. Drew graduated from Amherst College in 1926. In 1928 he applied to medical schools and was admitted to MeGill University in Montreal, Canada. He completed his medical degree and master’s degree in surgery in 1933.

Following the success of the “Blood for Britain” program, Drew was appointed the assistant director for the US blood banking system. During this time, he built a number of mobile blood donation stations, later known as blood delivery stations.
On April 1, 1950, tragedy struck. Drew was injured in a serious car accident while on his way to a conference and died from his injuries. Many medical colleges and schools have been named after him to honor his contribution.( 2024安徽省皖江名校高二上学期开学联考)

If you’re in the market for a new food or water dish for your cat, you might want to check out Free the Ocean’s Bamboo Cat Bowls. These are made of bamboo fibers and rice husks (稻壳) and are more eco-friendly than traditional plastic.
The presence of bamboo-used as a renewable filler—is part of what makes the bowl greener. Bamboo, which is technically a grass, grows 30% faster than trees and as much as 1.5 inches per hour! Not surprisingly, it produces 30% more oxygen and absorbs 35% more carbon dioxide than trees, according to Mimi Ausland, founder of Free the Ocean. “It’s a cut-and-come-again plant, which means it can be cropped without disrupting the root ball, reducing carbon giving off when it’s harvested.”
Rice husk is a byproduct of rice production that is a challenge to farmers because it is hard to break down and of no great value. Its use as a filler provides a purpose for an otherwise useless material and, along with the bamboo.
Ausland said, “Plastic cat dishes harbor bacteria (细菌), which can put your cat’s health at risk. Even if pet owners clean them regularly, they cannot be fully sanitized. Plastic bowls are the main cause of cat diseases.”
However, the bamboo cat bowl will not leach (渗入) harmful chemicals into your pet’s water the way that traditional plastic can and it is naturally free of bacteria.
Cats will like the bowls, as they have low edges. With an easy-to-pick-up handle, they come in four colors.
One customer commented, “My cats prefer these cat food bowls just like me. The cats like the low lip that makes it easy to eat out of. And the fact that they’re made of bamboo and that buying them makes a difference to the environment is amazing! And it is easy to wash in the dishwasher.”

Given the excitement it has created, there's a good chance that you've heard about ChatGPT. It's a powerful, new artificial intelligence tool, which can do a lot of things such as answering a question, explaining a concept, composing an email or writing a college essay, all in a matter of seconds.
"The essay, in particular the college essay, is dead," said Edward Tian, a student at Princeton University." For generations, we have been taught how to research, think, and write. That entire tradition is about to be completely changed.”
Despite having studied AI, Edward, like the rest of us, was so shocked by the power of ChatGPT that he couldn't shake thoughts about the challenges presented by the AI tool. Then he had an idea. What if he applied what he had learned over the last couple of years to help the public identify whether something has been written by a machine
On January 2, Edward released his app, GPTZero.
It basically uses ChatGPT against itself. To determine whether an essay is written by ChatGPT, GPTZero uses two indicators: the familiarity of text and the variations of sentences. If the text is very familiar to GPTZero- - because ChatGPT has also been trained on such data-- then it's more likely to be Al-generated.
Separately, GPTZero compares the variations of sentences. Humans tend to write with greater varieties, for example, with some longer or complex sentences alongside shorter ones.AI sentences are usually less varified.
Edward isn't trying to stop ChatGPT in its tracks. He believes that's impossible, and opposes blanket bans(禁止) against the use of ChatGPT, like the one recently announced by New York City public schools. Students, he believes, will use the technology anyway.
“GPTZero is not meant to be a tool to stop these technologies from being used," he said. "But with any new technology, we need to be able to use it responsibly and we need to have safeguards.
(山西省吕梁市孝义市2023-2024学年高二上学期开学考试)
32. What does Edward Tian think of ChatGPT
A It is very harmful to the society. B. It is a powerful and perfect AI tool.
C. It might cause problems for educators. D. It can share the burden with students.
33. What is a feature of the AI-produced essay, according to the text
A It has longer sentences. B. It contains more familiar words.
C. There are more difficult words. D. There are fewer changes of sentences.
34. What does Edward Tian suggest we do about new technologies
A. Wait and see at first. B. Use them responsibly.
C. Put them under strict control. D. Accept them as early as possible.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. GPTZero, a Safeguard Against ChatGPT B. GPTZero, a Necessary Helper for Students
C. ChatGPT, a Huge Threat to College Students D. ChatGPT, a Promising AI Tool in the Future

It's the end of another long day at the office after a poor night's sleep. As usual, you're exhausted, yet you want to stop at the gym on the way home to get the exercise you need to stay healthy. 36 This is a widespread problem.
To be healthy, the body needs to move through four stages of sleep several times each night. During the first and second stages, the body starts to decrease its rhythms. 37 Rapid eye movement sleep, called ram, is the final stage in which we dream. Studies have shown that missing ram sleep may lead to health problems. On the other hand, years of research has found sleep boosts immune functioning.
38 Without sleep, your muscles can't recover from the stress you put them through during workouts. "You have to give them time to recover and grow stronger," said sleep specialist Dr. Raj Dasgupta. "You're more likely to suffer an injury when you're exhausted due to slowed reaction times from your tired brain during the workout." 39 You might find yourself fearing your normal workouts.
Use common sense, experts said. If you're not sleeping well, don't go for that intense workout. 40 If you're pressed for time, consider fitting in several short bouts of exercise throughout your day. "Everything counts," Dasgupta said. "Do anything that makes you feel happy and refreshed. This is about hitting the reset button for yourself, not doing some form of exercise because you feel it necessary to.”
A. Walk or do yoga instead.
B. How does sleep affect our brain
C. Should you work out when suffering from sleep loss
D. Poor sleep can affect your motivation to exercise too.
E. It may be unwise to play a sport when you're very tired.
F. Enough workout can guarantee your good health and happiness.
G. Doing so prepares us for the third stage where the body is restoring itself.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Missy was absolutely my best friend in the whole world. We had known each other since first grade, and we literally did everything together. We frequently visited each other’s homes, we knew each other’s families like they were our own. The interesting thing about our relationship, however the fact was that the older we got, the more our values seemed to differ. We still enjoyed a lot of the same things, but I was a bit more settled while she loved being associated with popular people and things. Although she was basically a good person, she had no problem with forcing things to go her way.
Perhaps this is why it seemed that her family actually trusted me more than they trusted her. So, on the daywhen Missy showed up at my house with a huge dent (凹痕) in her father’s car, I knew that we were in for a troublesome time.
She had banged the car into a tree while out that day, and she knew her father was going to have an explanation. So she stopped by my house in order to make up a story that would lessen her father’s rage. Missy decided to tell him that while in a parking lot, someone must have backed into the car and dented it. Looking at the dent with some crashed leaves and bark still sticking there, I attempted to perish (打消) her thought, “I don’t think your father will buy it.” “Don’t worry,” she insisted, “even if my dad doesn’t trust me, he’ll trust you.” My role was to confirm for her. Now keep in mind that I had strong objections to lying and I wanted absolutely nothing to do with the situation. I loved her parents just like my own, and I did not want to be a party to this lie that Missy was creating. Nevertheless, after much request and a general questioning of my loyalty to our friendship, I decided that the least I could do was to act as a
silent witness. That way, I wasn’t actually lying; Ijust wasn’t telling the full truth.
注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
An hour or so later, we presented Missy’s father with the car and the inquiry began. Her father looked at me with great disbelief.

Dear David,
I'm your student, Li Hua, Through my personal experience, I've found that interaction can create a democratic and harmonious classroom atmosphere. Interaction changes the roles of both teachers and students. So I enjoy your communicating with us in English class.
Apart from the interactive ways you often use, I think you can add English debating competitions to our class, which can help those who are too shy to speak English in public have an opportunity to express their ideas. You're surely the judge of the competitions and we can listen to your conclusion. As you know, we all like your writing class. If you can give the beginning of a story to let us write its ending, we'll improve our imagination and have more interest in English writing.
I hope my advice will be helpful to you. Thanks for reading.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
读后续写:
An hour or so later, we presented Missy s’ father with the car and the inquire began. Under a barrage of inquiries, Missy recapped her concocted story unhurriedly, while I stood there in silent agreement. After Missy finishing her seemingly perfect statement, her father raised his eyebrows and turned to me, waiting for my proof. However, once again, I chose silence under his scrutinizing eyes with my heart pounding violently. Suddenly, he walked over to the dented area for a closer inspection. It was at that point that pieces of bark from the tree that Missy had hit fell out.
Her father looked at me with great disbelief. An enormous sense of guilt rose up in me as his cold eyes seemed to proclaim me as the “guilty” bystander.
