Last year, Mia McCarthy and Chase Robbins, both college students in the Iovine and Young Academy of USC(University of Southern California), were sitting around at 11 pm when they started craving for candy. The pair immediately ordered from DoorDash (a takeaway app) to settle the sweet tooth. After carefully tracking the driver for 45 minutes, the driver cancelled(取消) the delivery. This moment made them realize there had to be a quicker way for customers to order snacks without driving to a grocery store.
McCarthy and Robbins then set up their app -Handle, a service that delivers snacks, drinks, ice cream and household necessities to the USC area within 15 minutes. They spent the summer of 2021 exploring the process of starting a business.“We were trying to push things forward so fast that we started to hate weekends because no one else was working so we couldn't contact suppliers, ”Robbins said.
The major difficulty they faced was to figure out what strategy made the most sense for ordering and customer convenience. They decided the best choice was to hire engineers to build a fully functional app.
Although they made a lot of preparations, the app crashed on the night of its official launch(发布) in late August, letting McCarthy and Robbins feel hopeless. Even so, they didn't give up. Robbins spent the following 10 days coding(编码) the app so that the team could ensure success for their second launch. Mia's artistic background, combined with Robbins' engineering background, allowed them to work well together. “It was really hard and emotionally challenging," McCarthy said.“I'm really glad that we were able to make it.”
The early days of the business were nothing but difficult. McCarthy and Robbins delivered orders, worked on marketing and spoke with suppliers to improve the products the store was selling. Jason M. Allen was almost too nervous to enter his first art competition. Now, his award-winning image is stirring debates about whether art can be generated by a computer, and what, exactly, it means to be an artist.
In August 2022, Allen, a 39 year old game designer who lives in Pueblo West, Colorado, won first place in the "digital arts/digitally-operated photography" category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. His winning image, titled Theatre D'opera Spatial, was made with Midjourney -an artificial intelligence system that can produce detailed images when fed written prompts(提示).
Allen's winning image looks like a bright cross between a classic and modern painting. It's one of three such images he entered in the competition. Allen posted excitedly about his win on Midjourney's Discord server on August 25,along with pictures of his three entries; it spread quickly on Twitter days later, with many artists feeling angry about Allen's win because of his use of AI to create the image.“He just 'pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece ,”one Twitter user wrote. “We're watching the death of art unfold before our eyes.”
However, to get the final three images he entered in the competition, Allen said, he took over 80 hours. First, he played around with phrasing that led Midjourney to generate images of women in nice dresses and space helmets. Over time, with slight adjustments to his written prompts, he created 900 repeating processes of what led to his final three images. He gave the final touch to those three images in Photoshop. Then he ran the images through another software program called Gigapixel AI that can improve resolution(分辨率) and had the images printed at a local print shop.
Allen is glad that the debate over whether AI can be used to make art is getting so much attention. "Rather than hating the technology or the people behind it, we need to recognize it's a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward,”Allen said.
8. What do we know about Theatre D’opera Spatial
A. Its beauty is widely accepted. B. Its creation is an easy process.
C. It shows the death of traditional art. D. It has caused a lot of arguments.
9. What did Allen do to create his entries
A He searched for smart written prompts. B. He edited his final images in Photoshop.
C. He fed Midjourney with famous paintings. D. He developed the software named Gigapixel.
10, What is Allen's attitude to the debate over AI created art
A. Worried. B. Uncaring. C. Positive. D. Annoyed,
11. What might be the best title for the text
A. AI Beats Out Human Artists in the Art Field
B. AI Won an Art Contest and Artists Are Angry
C. An Artist Wins State Fair Art Contest and Laughs
D. The Artist From Pueblo West Is Defending His Work

It can be hard to convince homeowners to use less water on their lawns(草坪),particularly during a hot and dry summer. But tell them it's a competition for the ugliest lawn, and suddenly they may be more willing to give up using the sprinkler(洒水器).
This clever strategy was employed by the government of Gotland, Sweden's largest island located in the Baltic Sea. Gotland sees its population double during the summer months as tourists arrive. This puts pressure on the island's already-limited water supply, which is projected to decrease by 13% between 2021 and 2050,as demand is expected to rise by 40%
by 2045.
The campaign, called “Gotland's Ugliest Lawn", urged homeowners to compete for the saddest, deadest and brownest yard. They were asked to avoid watering for an entire season, then post a photo of the lawn using a label that linked it to the campaign.
Mimmi Gibson, the acting marketing and brand manager at Region Gotland, said that "the ugliest lawn contest would remind the islanders not to waste water, and to talk about ways they can adapt their gardens to suit the existing conditions and the climate crisis”.
The winner for this year was announced in mid-August, and it's Marcus Norstrom, who did not water his lawn once throughout the entire summer. His photo shows a large brown space, with some sparse yellow grasses sticking out the kind of yard in which you would not want to walk barefoot(赤脚地) for risk of hurting your feet. The government must be feeling pleased; its strategy has worked.
It's an interesting strategy which attempts to normalize and even celebrate dead grass. It is reasonable to assume that the more people see it around their communities, the more acceptable it will become. They may also grow curious when they realize there are other ways to create and maintain an attractive looking yard, even without irrigation( 灌溉).
12. What's the aim of the competition for the ugliest lawn
A. To reduce the waste of water. B. To limit the growth of local lawns.
C. To strengthen citizens' friendship. D. To enhance citizens' health awareness.
13. What do the numbers in paragraph 2 show
A.Gotland is rich in water resources.
B. People will have no water to drink in 2050.
C. Gotland is faced with serious lack of water.
T. The population of Gotland grows faster and faster.
14. What's Mimmi Gibson's attitude towards the ugliest lawn contest
A. Unconcerned. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Positive.
15. What is the purpose of the last paragraph
A. To explain the success of the strategy.
B. To tell citizens the danger of the ugliest lawn.
C. To discuss why it's dangerous to waste water.
D. To show citizens what the ugliest lawn looks like.
